A healthy pelvic floor is more than just strengthening with Kegal exercises. These are commonly prescribed as the blanket exercise to help with incontinence, pelvic pain or other issues related to your pelvic floor; however, they may not always be appropriate for your condition. In fact, strengthening an already tight pelvic floor can worsen your condition.
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy performed by a skilled Physiotherapist trained in pelvic floor health has been shown in research to successfully manage and treat related conditions, including but not limited to:
- Stress incontinence
- Urge incontinence
- Urinary and fecal urgency
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Pain with intercourse
Good pelvic floor health can also help prepare you for pregnancy, and stay healthy and comfortable during and after pregnancy.
A doctor’s referral is not necessary for Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, however, your doctor may help you to advise on seeing a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
A Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy initial assessment will not be much different than a regular physiotherapy initial assessment. Similar to a regular orthopedic assessment, it will entail completing an intake form, answering questions pertinent to your condition, and performing a series of physical tests guided by your physiotherapist. However, unlike a regular physiotherapy examination, you may have to fill in a few extra questionnaires. And unlike a regular orthopedic examination, you may undergo an internal exam (vaginal and/or rectal) on the first session. Depending on your specific condition an internal examination may not always be necessary. Our friendly receptionist and skilled physiotherapist will give you a more detailed overview of the procedure, including benefits and risks, and answer your questions.
We also offer free consultations with our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist, Nancy.
$120 Initial Session (60 minutes)
$95 Follow-up Session (45 minutes)
